It’s no secret that a great base (aka clear skin) makes a perfect canvas for makeup. It’s why cosmetic marketing almost always chooses the model with the already perfect skin to show a flawless finish. But what if you don’t have perfect skin?

This has always been a subject that comes up during my consultations with clients when it comes to makeup. They often are on the hunt for a foundation that gives the most coverage, but still appears natural. More often than not, when I ask what their skincare routine is, there is none. None at all! Sometimes, maybe the bare minimum, or the guilty soul who maybe takes a makeup wipe to her face if she has enough energy at the end of the day. My point? Skin care is important.

Although it is best to use several different products for different things (vitamin serums, toners, anti aging products) it can certainly be overwhelming. The truth is, what may work for me may not necessarily be your holy grail product. Each individual has different skin and different issues to tackle. What’s best is to start with a simple routine with quality products that will help you begin your skin care journey somewhere. If you already have an established regimen, then this will give you a glimpse into mine! If not, you can take inspiration or interest in the brands I mention. I suggest to also seek a sample or purchase a travel size to have a trial run so you can observe your skins response to the products.

I love this one because it is the perfect cleansing product that I used after I take my makeup off. The biggest key to proper makeup removal is using a makeup remover first then using a cleanser, such as this one, to cleanse your skin and remove residue. If you just simply use a cleanser to remove your makeup, you’re just spreading it all around and also over using product that will have you running out fairly quick. This specific cleanser removes it all but does not dry my skin out after doing so.

I have quite the combination of skin. My T-zone (the center of the face: forehead, nose, upper lip which resembles the letter T) is very oily and can barely keep any makeup in place while the rest of my face is dry. Since a majority of my skin suffers from dryness I tend to prefer extra hydrating products to keep my skin dewy and fresh. This specific moisurizer delivers amazing results when it comes to this! Products made with rose or rose water are usually hydrating but can often times be much too strong in fragrance. This moisturizer thankfully does not have that artificial smell to it which makes it extra easy for me to love! I highly recommend the Rose line from Fresh if you have similar concerns.

I love using face masks. It’s the perfect thing to do when you’re chilling and feel like doing something good… without much effort. The Sephora masks have been on my love-list lately because they’re affordable ($6) and work amazing. I use the Lotus monthly because as stated before I have pretty dry skin. The mask has this almost rubber-like texture to it that is loaded up with skin care. It feels so nice and refreshing! Best thing afterwards too? You don’t have to wash it off. You just take it off then massage the residue into your skin.

The most important tool for skin care is something that will properly remove any residue from dirt, makeup or oils. Hands are great, but sometimes it isn’t enough. As a makeup artist and someone who at times wears a full face of makeup, I need to know that everything will come off at night. The Clarisonic absolutely ensures that everything is removed which then helps my skin care to penetrate better when used after cleansing. I cannot LIVE without this product! So dramatic, right? The first time I ever used this, I understood what the hype was about. There may be knock off brands and cheaper alternatives, but I absolutely believe that Clarisonic is the best of them all! I have loved my results for years and have used this for almost 10 years!

This specific moisturizer helps so much with stubborn dry skin. I love to apply it after my skin is cleansed and my toner has been applied. A little bit goes a long way so there’s no need to waste product! This was a professional skin care line I used while in my esthetician course and instantly fell in love. It can be somewhat difficult to find so you can shop it by clicking on the image or if you have a license in beauty you can purchase it at Salon Centric.

Which one will you be trying? Let me know in the comments!

I was out shopping today and happened to, once again, walk by the St. Ives Apricot Scrub product and think to myself… should I purchase this product? I always opt for the best and most affordable face products I can get my hands on, yet there was always one thing stopping me from St. Ives, considering there has been lots of talk on whether or not St. Ives Apricot Scrub is or isn’t bad for your face’s skin. Truth is, it is actually a long-term harsh and damaging exfoliating product. The products are made out of crushed apricot seeds which tend to have sharp edges. While exfoliating your skin, these sharp edges can cause microscopic cuts through your skin, exposing it to more bacteria and possibly causing more future breakouts. While this product may make your face feel smooth and soft now, the long term effect of using this product can cause your skin to thin and become much more sensitive. This makes it much more weaker to take being exposed to the suns rays. It is actually stated that the product is so harsh for your skin, using it daily is a definite no-no!

So, you want to exfoliate your skin, yet keep it healthy and happy…for now, and forever? Try making an exfoliating product at home. One of my favorite home-made facial exfoliating recipes (from uses aspirin which helps spot treat pimples and works to clears acne/patches.

* 1-3 aspirin
* Coffee cup or glass cup
* Shallow dish
* Warm honey (runny honey), moisturizer made for the face or natural oil such as almond, olive or coconut

* Depending on the amount of coverage needed, use 1-3 aspirin.
* Crush the aspirin into small pieces by rolling a coffee cup or glass cup over them. Place aspirin in a shallow dish.
* Stir in a few drops of water to help the aspirin dissolve into a paste.
* Add warm honey, moisturizer or a bit of oil (almond, olive or coconut works). Stir well.
* Apply as a mask or spot treat the pimple or itchy area. Allow to dry. Wash off after 10 minutes.

If you’re not exactly up for prepping your own at home, or just don’t have much time for it, Lush Cosmetics is my favorite go-to brand for handmade cosmetics and skin care. The Cup O’Coffee is such an incredible exfoliating product for the face + body! The rich coffee bean scent really makes it a must have for a morning shower. You’ll be feeling awake with smooth skin in no time!
